Reflexology for Stress Relief
Stress is a normal physical response to events when a person feels threatened, upset or their equilibrium is threatened in some way. At this point, the body's defences kick into a rapid, automatic process known as the fight-or-flight reaction, or the stress response. When there is a perceived threat, the nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones rouse the body for emergency action and the blood pressure rises, the heart beats faster, senses become sharper and breathing quickens.
These changes can be immensely important to us when faced with an immediate threat; but what if you’re under constant stress and the alarm button stays on?
During periods of prolonged stress, these changes cause harmful reactions in the body and unfortunately today, stress is directly linked to 75% - 95% of all illness and disorders.
As a complementary therapy, reflexology offers a gentle yet effective way to ease tension, calm the mind, and restore balance to the body. Because reflexology works on the nervous system, it’s uniquely suited to counteract stress-induced changes. It helps shift the body from the parasympathetic (fight-or-flight) to a more parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) state, promoting relaxation, emotional balance and enhancing an overall sense of wellbeing. More importantly, regular reflexology treatments can build resilience – making clients feel better equipped to handle future stress and stressful events.
